Curtain’s Up Theater Company is proud to present Thornton Wilder’s beloved classic “Our Town.” This heart-warming, thought-provoking production will be directed by this year’s recipient of the AFL Lifetime Achievement Award, the incredible Diana Enloe. After a lifetime of work in the theater, Diana has decided to bring her “swan song” to life on stage at The Rox Theater. Performances will be held November 19 – 22, 2026. Rehearsals will begin September 27, 2026. This is your chance to be a part of this Thornton Wilder classic and to work with a local legend in the theater.
Show Description:
Set in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, Our Town follows the lives of its residents through everyday moments of family, friendship, love, marriage, and loss. Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play uses minimal scenery and props, placing the focus squarely on the actors and the story. Simple on the surface but deeply moving, the play asks audiences and performers to consider how often we overlook the extraordinary moments of ordinary life.
General Audition Notes:
- Strong, naturalistic acting and genuine ensemble chemistry are essential.
- Much of the play is performed with minimal or imaginary props, requiring clear physical storytelling.
- Actors should be comfortable with direct audience address and understated performance.
- The large cast offers opportunities for performers across a broad range of ages.
- Expect cold readings with an emphasis on listening, relationships, and emotional honesty.
Character Breakdown:
- Stage Manager – The narrator and guide through Grover’s Corners. Warm, observant, philosophical, and occasionally humorous. A substantial role requiring excellent storytelling skills and a strong connection with the audience.
- Emily Webb – A bright, thoughtful young woman whom audiences follow from adolescence into adulthood. Requires sincerity, vulnerability, and considerable emotional range.
- George Gibbs – An easygoing, good-hearted young man who grows from an occasionally distracted teenager into a husband and adult. Warmth and natural chemistry with Emily are important.
- Dr. Gibbs – George’s father and the town doctor. Dependable, practical, and devoted to his family and community.
- Mrs. Gibbs – George’s mother. Loving and hardworking, with dreams and desires beyond her everyday routine.
- Mr. Webb – Emily’s father and editor of the local newspaper. Intelligent, good-humored, and affectionate.
- Mrs. Webb – Emily’s mother. Practical, caring, and firmly rooted in family life.
- Simon Stimson – The church choir director. A troubled and complex man whose story provides one of the play’s darker contrasts.
- Mrs. Soames – An enthusiastic, talkative townswoman who takes particular delight in weddings and community happenings.
- Rebecca Gibbs – George’s younger sister. Curious, observant, and imaginative.
- Wally Webb – Emily’s younger brother.
- Joe/Si Crowell – Young newspaper carriers who help establish the daily rhythm of Grover’s Corners.
- Howie Newsome – The local milkman and a familiar part of the town’s morning routine.
- Professor Willard, Constable Warren, Sam Craig, Joe Stoddard and Ensemble/Townspeople – Featured supporting characters who create the larger community of Grover’s Corners.
