1776 is a classic musical that dramatizes the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. With sharp dialogue, historical characters, and a mix of humor and gravitas, the show brings to life the personal and political struggles of America’s founding fathers.
Characters:
- John Adams – Fiery, determined, and often seen as obnoxious; driving force behind independence. Requires strong vocals and commanding stage presence. – Baritone (A2–G4)
- Benjamin Franklin – Witty, wise, and a master of diplomacy; offers humor and heart. -aritone (Ab2–E4) Character voice; more about personality and timing than vocal power.
- Thomas Jefferson – Reserved, intellectual, and idealistic; reluctant leader but pivotal figure. – Tenor (C3–G4)
- Edward Rutledge – Smooth, confident, with a commanding presence; leads the powerful “Molasses to Rum.” – Baritone (C3–G4)
- Richard Henry Lee – Charismatic and comical; leads the energetic “The Lees of Old Virginia.” – Tenor (C3–G4)
- John Dickinson – Aristocratic and conservative; the main opposition to independence. – Baritone (C3–E4)
- Stephen Hopkins – Elderly delegate with a sharp tongue and love of drink; comedic role. – Baritone (C3–E4)
- Abigail Adams – John’s wife, seen in letters; supportive and strong, with beautiful duets. – Mezzo-soprano (C4–F5)
- Martha Jefferson – Jefferson’s wife; sweet, romantic, and sings the lovely “He Plays the Violin.” – Soprano (Ab3–D5)
