Radium Girls is a powerful drama based on the true story of the young women who painted luminous watch dials in the 1920s and fought for justice after falling ill from radium poisoning. The play explores themes of corporate greed, workers’ rights, and personal courage, with a fast-paced, multi-character structure.

Characters:

  • Grace Fryer – A young dial painter, determined, hopeful, and ultimately courageous as she takes on the company.
  • Arthur Roeder – President of the U.S. Radium Corporation; ambitious, conflicted, and increasingly defensive.
  • Kathryn Schaub – Grace’s friend, lively and humorous but deteriorating from illness.
  • Irene Rudolph – Another dial painter, cheerful and devoted to her friends.
  • Tom Kreider – Grace’s fiancé; loving and supportive but torn as the fight drags on.
  • Dr. Von Sochocky – Company founder and inventor of the paint; brilliant but regretful.
  • Mrs. Fryer / Mr. Fryer – Grace’s concerned, working-class parents.
  • Sob Sister – A female reporter covering the case, sharp and observant.
  • Markley – Company lawyer, smooth, intimidating, and cold.
  • Ensemble – Multiple roles (doctors, factory workers, clerks, consumers) often played by a small group of versatile actors.

Actors should be prepared for emotionally charged scenes, period style, and (for ensemble) the ability to switch characters quickly with distinct physical and vocal choices. The show is poignant, urgent, and human, requiring sincerity and depth from its cast.
