Set in the underground tunnels of London during the Blitz, Alice by Heart is a hauntingly beautiful musical inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. As bombs fall above, teenage Alice escapes into her imagination to cope with loss, love, and the harsh realities of war. The show blends whimsy with deep emotion, using folk- and rock-influenced music.

Characters:

  • Alice Spencer – A curious, imaginative teenage girl struggling with grief. Requires strong acting, singing, and emotional depth.
  • Alfred Hallam / White Rabbit – Alice’s sick friend; shy and gentle in real life, anxious and frantic as the White Rabbit. Sensitive and heartfelt.
  • Tabatha / Queen of Hearts – A nurse with strict authority, transformed into the fierce and commanding Queen in Alice’s fantasy.
  • Harold Pudding / Mad Hatter – Playful, unpredictable, and eccentric. Needs comedic timing and bold character work.
  • Clarissa / Duchess – Snobby and judgmental in real life; exaggerated and comical as the Duchess.
  • Red Cross Nurse / Cheshire Cat – Warm and mysterious, guiding Alice through difficult emotions.
  • Dodgy / Caterpillar – Laid-back, philosophical, and sly.
  • Angus / March Hare, Clarence / Dormouse, and Ensemble – Versatile actors playing multiple Wonderland figures and supporting roles.

Auditioners should prepare to show vulnerability, strong storytelling through song, and the ability to shift between grounded realism and heightened fantasy. An indie, contemporary vocal style (rather than traditional musical theater) is a plus.
