Inspecting Carol is a fast-paced holiday farce set in a small regional theater as they attempt (and fumble) their annual production of A Christmas Carol. Actors should have strong comedic timing, physical comedy skills, and the ability to play up the absurdity of theater mishaps.
Characters:
- Zorah Bloch – The intense, artistic director, desperate to save the theater.
- Wayne Wellacre – A clueless actor who shows up to audition and is mistaken for an NEA inspector.
- Larry Vauxhall – Longtime actor playing Scrooge; dramatic, self-important, and resistant to change.
- M.J. McMann – The practical stage manager, trying to hold everything together.
- Dorothy Tree Hapgood – Aging actress, forgetful and overly emotional.
- Phil Hewlitt – Set designer and jack-of-all-trades, often in over his head.
- Kevin Emery – Tech crew, sarcastic and unmotivated.
- Betty Andrews – Optimistic and eager actress, trying to keep the peace.
- Sidney Carlton – Board member or financial figure, concerned about the theater’s survival.
This ensemble comedy thrives on big personalities, quick dialogue, and controlled chaos. Auditioners should lean into their character’s quirks and be ready to embrace physicality and improvisational energy.
